With the program out for the Mine Waste and Tailings Conference 2023, we spoke to Conference Organising Committee Chair and Keynote Speaker, Professor David Williams. David offered his thoughts on the program, which includes 58 papers, plus why he’s excited to get to the Conference this July.

Who should be attending the Mine Waste and Tailings Conference 2023?

Mine Waste and Tailings 2023 provides a unique opportunity for Australasian mine waste professionals to hear the latest global advances of relevance to them.

What aspect of the conference you most looking forward to?

Like many, I look forward most to the opportunity to network and to expand my network, particularly post-COVID.

What stands out to you from the 2023 program?

The four keynotes from international experts and four expert panel discussions are the standouts in this program.

What do you see as the biggest challenge associated with life cycle waste rock and tailings management in 2023?

The biggest challenge is restoring confidence and trust in waste management by mining industry, through demonstrated leading practice.

What sets 2023 apart from previous Mine Waste and Tailings conferences?

The Brumadinho tailings dam failure and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management that followed are a watershed.

What else do those considering attending the conference need to know?

Of course, Brisbane in July offers the perfect weather and backdrop for MWT 2023.

Professor David Williams initiated and directs the Geotechnical Engineering Centre at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and also manages the industry-funded Large Open Pit Project.  He has over 40 years of teaching, research and consulting experience.
