Site investigation of tailings dams: from in situ testing and sampling to parameter selection

This workshop will cover, at a “warts and all” level, the geotechnical investigation of Tailings Dams using up-to-date in situ methods.  Strengths and weaknesses of the various techniques will be discussed, along with developments that have occurred or are in progress to help reduce weaknesses.

The workshop will not only be a “how to do it properly” exercise but will include an important session on determination of important materials’ geotechnical properties from the investigation works.

Presenters:

Allan McConnell

Lead
Allan McConnell is a geotechnical engineer, with about 50 years
experience in Australia, SE Asia and the Pacific. He is the conceiver
and founder of the specialised geotechnical testing company Insitu
Geotech Services (IGS).

Allan has experience in most aspects of geotechnical engineering.
He is known for his past consulting work on major development
projects, including many on soft soil sites, and for his “crusade” to
reduce risk and uncertainty in geotechnical engineering. It is this
passion for reducing risk and uncertainty that led to the evolution
of IGS.

IGS makes a significant part of its business from testing and
sampling of mine tailings dams, to assess their engineering
properties of strength, compressibility, permeability, etc which are
all critical parameters required by tailings engineers and mine
managers to determine the safety of their dams and to develop
safe strategies for further development and/or closure and
rehabilitation.

Andy Fourie

Presenter
Andy is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering at The University of Western Australia in Perth. He has been involved in many industry-focused projects with current projects including an evaluation of tailings storage facilities monitoring technologies managed by AMIRA and funded by eight mining companies, Future Tails aimed at training, research and education to improve tailings management funded by BHP and Rio Tinto, and evaluating potential static liquefaction of tailings to prevent failures, funded by six mining companies as well as the Australian Research Council. Andy is also currently a member of five International Tailings Review Boards.

Jamie Sharp

Presenter
James Sharp, P.Eng. – CEO, ConeTec Group

James (Jamie) Sharp is a Canadian geotechnical engineer with 25 years of site characterization experience. He has conducted, managed, or led thousands of geotechnical investigations throughout the world.

Jamie currently leads the ConeTec Group, with offices in Canada, USA, Australia, Peru, Chile, UK, Sweden and South Africa; along with project locations throughout the world. With over 500 people worldwide, the ConeTec Group is a full service geotechnical site investigation contractor, offering high quality in-situ testing, drilling, and geophysical services. www.conetec.com

Marcelo Llano

Presenter
Marcelo is a Registered Professional Engineer in Queensland since 2018, with significant experience providing geotechnical consulting services to large projects in Australia, Papua New Guinea and South America. He has a solid technical background; his expertise includes using his fore-front large-deformation numerical modelling skills to simulate the failure of the Brumadinho Dam in Brazil; his failure model using material point method (MPM) techniques was included in one of the expert panel’s report. He has been involved in multiple dam safety reviews, third-party reviews, site investigations, GISTM compliance and gap assessments for tailings and water retention structures. Moreover, he has published and/or presented more than 30 papers in international conferences and journals, and his work has received over 200 citations.
