Australia impresses at World Mining Congress

The World Mining Congress will come to Australia for the first time in its 60-year history and will showcase the nation’s vast mining and innovation capability and impact.

More than 2500 people and 250 exhibitors attended in Astana, with similar crowds expected in Australia in 2021. Delegates were treated to a taste of what Australia has to offer when it hosts the Congress in three years’ time.

The WMC 2021 promotion in Astana gathered support and interest, with Australia awarded best international stand. Both 2021 Congress Chair Dr Hua Guo from CSIRO and AusIMM CEO Stephen Durkin attended WMC 2018 to officially launch the 2021 event.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) will work closely with the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) to host and deliver the WMC 2021.

‘The support for WMC 2021 has been strong, and we are excited to be bringing this prestigious global event to Brisbane. Mining is such a significant part of Australia’s history and our international reputation as leaders in mining technology and innovation is part of our national identity,’ said WMC 2021 Chair, Dr Guo.

‘The WMC 2021 in Australia will bring together distinguished minds from across the world. Information exchange and collaboration, and joint efforts between industry, research organisations and universities are central to resourcing our future.’

Working closely with Dr Guo and CSIRO, the AusIMM will leverage its skilled events team and draw on its long history of running world-class conferences to ensure a highly successful 2021 Congress.

Stephen Durkin reflected on the significance of bringing the international event to Australia.

‘The sheer magnitude of WMC 2018 in Astana shows the importance of the resources sector on a global scale. Mining and associated industries are crucial to the economic development of nations, and Australia is truly a world leader in this space’, said Mr Durkin.

‘As the peak body for professionals working in the resources sector, with a formidable track record for high-quality industry conferences, AusIMM is delighted to be working with CSIRO to bring the World Mining Congress to Australia.’

The World Mining Congress in Brisbane, Australia will be hosted at the world-class Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre from 20-22 July 2021.
