Welcome to our readers of this, our first newsletter for 2022.  The year is shaping up to be a busy one for all of us, I suspect, as consulting life gets closer to the old “normal” as travel restrictions ease.

Over the holiday break and New Year, the various working groups within the JORC Review have been busy. A top priority is to formulate a recommendation around Competent Persons and recognition of same. A further report will be made on this in due course. Progress has admittedly been slow, but offsetting this, every care has been taken to ensure the review groups are truly stakeholder representative.

The ConSoc priorities for this year will include the further development of two projects:

  • Study Processes for Resource Projects Short Course – the first course (and modules) have been completed and delivered at the time of writing; and
  • Mineral Consultants Handbook – a proposal for a training course based on the Handbook has been lodged with the AusIMM Events team. This a follow on from the six successful webinars we ran in 2021.

Of these two projects, thought is being given to how far the project studies initiative should develop. The options include: training courses (happening), a more comprehensive handbook, or a new Code.

We also have involvement with other AusIMM activities such as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Social Responsibility (SR) policy development, input to the Trusted Voice initiatives and promotion of the Chartered Professional program.

The Consultant’s Directory still needs your details added if you have not already provided your consent for this. Log in to your dashboard and ensure you have allowed for this – and then check to see (or edit) your entry.

Congratulations go to Sue Border on receiving the Charles Marshall Professional Excellence Award at the Brisbane AusIMM Congress last year.  We’d certainly like to see more nominations flow in for this prestigious consultant’s award, so please give it some thought and see the website awards page for details.

Thanks also go to Peter Hills for his many years on committee including several as Chair.
