Webinar: Study level matters - Geotechnical requirements for robust underground mine design
Join the Geomechanics Society for their Webinar: Study level matters - Geotechnical requirements for robust underground mine design.
About this event
This webinar explores the ongoing challenges associated with defining appropriate geotechnical data requirements for underground mining studies and introduces a new conceptual framework to assist practitioners in selecting the most appropriate study level based on mining method and geological complexity.
The framework is intended as a practical, discussion-based tool and will be presented for critical review, testing, and refinement by industry professionals.
Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in underground mining and geotechnical consulting, Ruth Stephenson will outline the expected level of effort at each study stage, including the types of geotechnical assessments, inputs, and engineering judgement required to support robust decision-making.
The webinar will examine how study expectations evolve as projects progress, and how fit-for-purpose data collection and interpretation can reduce risk while avoiding unnecessary scope and cost.
With extensive experience across underground mine operations in Western Australia and consulting to mines and projects globally, Ruth brings a practical, operations-focused perspective to study development, reviews, operational support, and auditing. Her deep involvement in underground geotechnical engineering, combined with her commitment to knowledge-sharing and mentoring, provides valuable insight into how geotechnical frameworks can be applied effectively across a range of geological and operational contexts.
This session will be of particular interest to geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, study managers, and technical leaders involved in underground project studies who are seeking clarity, consistency, and improved outcomes in geotechnical study planning and execution.
Speaker/s
Ruth Stephenson
Her experience includes nine years at underground mine site operations in Western Australia and over 12 years of consulting to mines and projects globally including studies, reviews, operational assistance, and auditing.
Ruth is well-published providing positive technical contributions in underground geotechnical engineering. She continues these contributions through sharing knowledge, helping others to solve challenges, and to maximise their learning experience.
Ruth is also a Fellow of AusIMM with Chartered Professional status.
