Geotechnical and groundwater factors are fundamental to most mining projects and are essential Modifying Factors to be considered in the conversion of an Ore Resource to an Ore Reserve and Life of Mine Plan.

Mine planning engineers are generally unable to produce an Ore Reserve estimate without close ongoing input from geotechnical and groundwater professionals throughout the development of the project.

All groups involved in this process need to fully understand what is required. The aim of this presentation is to assist all groups to provide more reliable estimates by, making all aware of the relevant technical issues, and by providing a better appreciation of the content and approaches that have proven successful.

This presentation highlights the accuracies and degrees of confidence that can be achieved in practice at the different project development stages resulting in an increased awareness of the risks.

The presentation will cover open pit, underground, waste dumps and spoil piles; tailings storage, coffer dams associated with temporary or permanent exclusion of large surface water bodies, major river or stream diversions; and water storages. Not all aspects are covered in detail, includes general guidance on good practice in a more holistic sense in terms of the understanding and approaches that have proven useful.

Tim Sulllivan

Mr Sullivan graduated from Macquarie University in 1973 with a degree majoring in geology. He joined Coffey’s in 1974 and was employed with them till 1993. While at Coffey’s Tim was a director of the firm and established the Mining Geotechnics Group. In 1979-80 he undertook postgraduate studies in London and was awarded an MSc from the University of London and a DIC from the Imperial College of Science and Technology.

From 1992-1993, he was a Visiting Professor at the School of Mines, UNSW, from 2002 to 2007 Adjunct Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, UNSW and from 1997 to 2000 he was also the NSW Coroner’s adviser on the Thredbo Landslide. In 1993 Tim established his own firm Pells Sullivan Meynink (PSM).

Tim has been a geotechnical consultant for some of the world’s largest mining operations and companies including BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Xstrata, Glencore, Newmont, Anglo Gold, Pilbara Iron and Newcrest. In addition to all the states and mainland territories of Australia, major projects have been located in India, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Africa, South America, Chile, Philippines, Mexico, New Zealand and Fiji. Tim has worked on more than 400 mining projects at all stages from planning to operating.
