About this event

In this presentation, Desmond FitzGerald will critically review magnetic and gravity survey practices and examine how older surveys can be revisited to uplift their information content to modern standards. Many government data repositories contain 20+ year-old surveys that remain the primary dataset for exploring under cover.

With 50 years of continuous improvements in automation in geophysics, a case can be made for applying AI. However, older surveys and their limitations present complex decision-making requirements that are not yet automatable. Furthermore, geology is still emerging from being a descriptive science—structural geology rules and implicit
engines based on geostatistical methods have emerged as the frontrunners for ML in geology. Ultimately, because geology remains largely descriptive, AI currently has its limits.

Speaker/s

Desmond FitzGerald

Desmond FitzGerald is founder and Director of Intrepid group of companies.

Des obtained a BE (Mining with Hons.) in 1969 and a PhD in Mining in 1977, both from the University of Melbourne.
Started work on the Melbourne Underground and Zinc Corporation using Finite Element stress/strain simulations in 3D.

Later Work includes:
•Principal author of the INTREPID geophysical processing and mapping software product.
•Pioneered continental scale high accuracy, potential field geophysics, in partnership with GA.
•3D Geomodeller: Integrating structural geology and geophysics. A JV with BRGM (French Geological survey).
•Moksha: Popular 2.5D Airborne Electro-Magnetic inversion
•Partnered with many Geological Surveys, Geoscience Australia, GSSA, GSWA, GSNSW, GSV, Namibia, GS Ireland, BRGM, GTK & USGS.
With over 45 years’ experience in the resources industry, Des has a range of interests in the physics, mathematics, technical software and instrumentation hardware areas. Currently entangled with sorting out 3D geological folding.
