Tech talk: South32 Cannington Mine – Planning for Closure
Join the North Queensland Branch for their June tech talk: South32 Cannington Mine – Planning for Closure.
About this event
The Queensland Government introduced reforms associated with rehabilitation and financial assurance in the resources sector in 2018, taking effect in 2019. The Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Act 2018 established a Financial Provisioning Scheme applicable to all Environmental Authority (EA) holders replacing the financial assurance arrangements, introduced amendments to how estimated rehabilitation cost for EAs are calculated and amended the EP Act to introduce new requirements for the progressive rehabilitation and closure of mined land (PRCP).
South32 Cannington mine submitted their first PRC Plan and PRCP Schedule application in October 2022 (received as properly made), responded to an RFI and have submitted two additional PRCP applications (also properly made), since this time. Negotiations of the PRCP schedule are underway.
Tracey will discuss Cannington’s PRCP, Financial Provisioning and ERC journey and the importance of integrated closure planning in any proposed or existing mine’s operational planning.
