Join the Perth Branch for their In- Person and Livestream Tech Talk: Material density, swell, moisture and SG in mining – Tricks and Traps.

About this event

Do you know the impact for getting these factors wrong? Material density, swell, moisture and specific gravity assumptions play crucial roles across mining projects.

In the second “Voices from the face” panel discussion, the Perth Branch will be exploring these concepts in depth. All affect outcomes - from Mineral Resource estimates, through Ore Reserve estimates to processing, waste storage, tailings storage and closure.

Ivy Chen, a leading mineral resource governance specialist, will moderate the evening as panellists Paul Dunbar, Mark Chesher and Andrew Curtis will provide insights into geology, mine engineering and metallurgy. Each panellist will offer a brief overview of their discipline, followed by a moderated panel discussion and an opportunity for audience questions and commentary.

Ivy Chen

Moderator
Ivy is the founder of GeoReg Mining and Compliance, providing advice and support for the public discussion of mineral resources and their prospectivity and value, in line with requirements of the JORC & VALMIN Codes, the corporations’ act and listing rules in Australia, and other jurisdictions. Ivy was ASIC’s national advisor for geology and mining from 2009 to 2015, on the VALMIN Committee from 2015 to 2026, and is currently a member of the WA government’s Mining and Petroleum Advisory Committee, the WA Investment Attraction Fund Governance Board and a past-director of the AusIMM.

Paul Dunbar

Panellist
Paul Dunbar is the Founder and Principal of MinVal, a specialised consultancy providing advice in geology, mineral asset valuation, and evaluation. With more than 30 years exploration, development, project management and economic evaluation experience across multiple commodities and deposit styles he is experienced in the determination of bulk densities for mineral resource estimates and the impact on valuations and evaluations. Paul completed a Master of Science in Mineral Exploration and Evaluation at Queens University, Canada. He has held director and executive positions in multiple companies, is a Fellow of the AusIMM, a Member of the AIG and the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) and currently sits on the VALMIN committee.

Mark Chesher

Panellist
Mark Chesher is an independent consulting mining engineer with around 20 years of operations experience and more than 25 years as a consultant to companies in a variety of commodities and mineral styles having managed feasibility studies and reviews for projects in Australia, Africa, Europe and Asia for gold, platinum, base metals, uranium, magnetite, phosphate, potash and mineral sands projects. He has seen many projects and the operational impact of getting material properties wrong at various stages. Mark is a Fellow of the AusIMM and a committee member of the Perth Branch.

Andrew Curtis

Panellist
Andrew Curtis is a Principal Process Consultant with Sedgman. He has over 35 years of experience in the resources sector, specialising in minerals processing, process plant design, and technical leadership. He has managed studies, implementation and operational support across all stages of the project lifecycle. Much of his career has focused on guiding projects from early testwork and concept development through to construction, commissioning and steady-state operations. Having seen projects evolve from “an idea on the back of an envelope” to fully operational facilities, he brings a highly practical and experience-led perspective to the development of technical solutions and project delivery. He has led multidisciplinary technical teams on major global mining and processing projects and has experience across iron ore, lithium, rare earths, copper, nickel, manganese, coal, gold, and potash.
