Most ASX listed explorers and producers are already using AI on announcements before they go to market, usually through general-purpose tools and usually without disclosing it. Many specialists contributing to public reports use AI tools to check and analyse data, find trends, summarise reports and write recommendations.

So what should a Competent Person disclose about the contribution of AI to their work? There is a line in the JORC Code Table 1 that has been sitting there since 2012: if a computer  assisted estimation method was chosen include a description of computer software and parameters used. Long before anyone was arguing about AI, the Code recognized the principle that when a machine helps produce a number, the reader is entitled to know. This could be extended to all estimates and reports.

In the third “Voices from the Face” panel discussion, the Perth Branch will hear short presentations from Haim Ozchakir, AIUC Global, and Moti Tentzer, GeoValid, on different aspects of AI in public reporting, followed by a panel discussion on the role of AI in preparing reports and the underlying estimates.

One system uses AI to check the reporting while the other checks the AI usage. Is use of an AI an issue that should be addressed in a transparent report made under the JORC Code?

Ivy Chen, a leading mineral resource governance specialist, will moderate the evening as we bring together Haim and Moti as panellists, together with Graham Jeffress, Chair of JORC, and Leigh Slomp, member of the Valmin committee. Each will provide their personal views and the panel members will take questions on how AI might influence reporting in the future. Note that Graham and Leigh are experienced practitioners, will participate in a personal capacity and will not speak in any official capacity on behalf of JORC or Valmin.

The JORC and Valmin Codes are clear that transparency is a guiding principle in reporting, and there are numerous ways for us to meet this objective. Please join us as this promises to be an interesting evening as we look into the crystal ball of future of reporting.
