Unlocking the Value of Structural Geology in Mining, Exploration & 3D Modelling

SRK and Seequent invite you to an immersive two-day Structural Geology and 3D Modelling Short Course, designed to sharpen your skills in structural data collection.

Through hands-on exercises using drill core samples and structural data from real deposits, you’ll build confidence in collecting, analysing and interpreting data. This is applied geology at its best - practical, relevant and immediately transferable to your work.

Participants will learn how to integrate applied structural geology with 3D geological modelling and gain insights that support better decision-making across near-mine operations, brownfields and greenfields exploration, and resource estimation.

The course will cover the following topics:

Day 1: Data Collection & Interpretation

  • The importance of structural geology to exploration and mining projects
  • Measuring and acquisition methodology in the field and using drill core
  • Effective QAQC of structural data
  • How to analyse, interpret and visualise structural data in stereographic nets and in 3D

Day 2: Using Structural Data & 3D Modelling

  • Practical experience building structural 3D models in Leapfrog Geo
  • A better understanding of structure and deposit geology through 3D integration and modelling
  • How to interpret structural data to determine the controls for modelling mineralisation

Presenters:

Heike Fourie

MSc, BSc (Hons), BSc, Pr.Sci.Nat., GSSA
Senior Structural Geologist at SRK
Heike is a dedicated applied structural and economic geologist with expertise in structural controls on the formation of economic mineral deposits across diverse tectonic environments.

Heike excels in applying multidisciplinary approaches to enhance geological interpretations and support project development.

Her experience spans structurally complex terranes and deposit types, including copper, cobalt, silver, gold, antimony, manganese, and iron ore deposits. Heike has worked on open pit and underground mining operations, and greenfield and brownfield exploration projects across Africa, Papua New Guinea, Australia and the Middle East.

Heike’s technical skill set includes advanced 3D geomodelling, structural core logging, GIS compilations, and remote sensing interpretation, and has been integral to numerous projects leveraging her expertise in geophysical and remote sensing dataset interpretation. She is an expert user in Leapfrog Geo and familiar with the use of multiple remote sensing and 3D software packages, including ArcGIS, QGIS and Micromine.

Heike has a Master of Science (cum laude) in Structural and Economic Geology from Stellenbosch University that she completed in 2 years while working full-time as a consultant.

Ben Jupp

BSc Hons (Geology), MAIG
Principal Consultant at SRK
Ben has over 20 years of experience specialising in geology and 3D geological modelling. He has worked in several commodities within Australia and internationally, including structurally complex shear and vein hosted gold, iron ore, nickel sulfide, copper and sediment hosted copper-gold systems and lead-zinc systems. His experience is varied and includes multi-scale mineral and oil and gas prospectivity studies, mineral targeting studies, structural mapping and 3D geological modelling at both deposit and regional scales. Ben has strong technical knowledge inclusive of structural geology, geophysical and remote sensing analysis, seismic interpretation, structural mapping, geochemistry, GIS and geophysical modelling. Ben has expertise in several 3D modelling software packages, including GOCAD-SKUA™ and Leapfrog™.

Richard Moody

BSc, MAusIMM
Principal Geologist at SRK
Richard is a geologist with over 25 years of experience delivering projects end-to-end, with strengths in process optimisation, stakeholder management, and the full geological information cycle (planning, execution, modelling and communication).

He has led teams and contractors, and has demonstrated expertise in 3D geological modelling, structural input to geotechnical risk assessment, estimation, project management, QAQC for mining and exploration, meeting facilitation, and stakeholder engagement.

Since joining SRK, Richard has completed peer and structural reviews with associated model updates for multiple channel iron deposit, Marra Mamba and Brockman iron ore deposits using Leapfrog, Vulcan, Geology Core, Wellcad, Dips, acQuire, ArcGIS Pro and in-house tools, with full reporting and formal model handovers.

Mark Rieuwers

PhD, BSc Hons (Geology), MAIG
Principal Consultant at SRK
Mark has 20+ years of experience in the mining and exploration industry with a track record of discovery and project delivery – predominantly in nickel sulfides and iron-oxide-copper-gold, gold, copper, iron, and lithium systems. Mark’s PhD work in the USA concentrated on the application and integration of structural geology, field mapping, metamorphic petrology and geochronology to help unravel complex tectonics. During his years in the industry, he has focused on integrating mineral systems’ geoscience, structural geology, geochemistry and geophysics in driving effective exploration targeting and generative strategies; and applying mapping, 3D geological and structural modelling to help understand and define complex mineral systems. Mark’s interests lie in combining field studies and desktop interpretations, prospectivity modelling and implicit 3D modelling along with applying such learnings to the mining environment, including on-site training in 3D modelling and applied structural geology. Mark has extensive experience in field program management including all aspects relating to large exploration and infill drilling programs.

Joel Vergunst

Project Geologist at Seequent
Joel Vergunst is a Project Geologist at Seequent, specialising in geological modeling. His background encompasses a focus on greenfields and brownfields projects.

Within Seequent's innovative tech environments, he serves as a Leapfrog Geo Trainer and IMAGO Technical Assistant. His work history includes geological exploration and resource assessment at De Grey Mining, where he progressed from Exploration Geologist to Project Geologist. During his tenure at De Grey Mining, he contributed to environmentally and socially responsible resource development.
