This year’s International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) is taking place at ICC Sydney from 21-23 October.

We sat down with IMARC panellist Stephanie Gelland AAusIMM, General Manager People & Culture at Kingston Resources and AusIMM WIMnet NSW Chair.

Stephanie shares what she’ll be focusing on as part of her panel discussion, including practical and culturally intelligent strategies for progressing inclusive work practices.

Stephanie also talks about the opportunities at IMARC for international collaboration with global Women in Mining organisations, plus provides tips for new professionals starting their careers.

What are you planning to highlight in your panel discussion at IMARC 2025?

I am joining a panel to discuss ‘Practical ways to progress inclusive work practices effectively’. I hope to explore strategies that are actionable, measurable and culturally intelligent. How we design inclusive systems and processes that move beyond unconscious bias awareness to embed inclusion into everything we do, helping employees navigate and foster real-world inclusion. The highlight of a panel discussion is always the opportunity to share ideas with the other panellists.

What are you most excited to discuss and learn about at IMARC?

I’m excited by the opportunity to network with international Women in Mining (WiM) organisations, to share what’s working to attract, support and develop women in the resource industry and finding ways to collaborate across countries. I get a lot out of the Talk it Forward dialogue tables where discussions are open and transparent and there is a genuine feel of collaboration.

I am always interested in building broader sustainability knowledge and looking for opportunities to enhance community partnerships and foster inclusivity within our industry.

IMARC has a strong focus on encouraging the next generation of mining leaders. Do you have any words of advice for those looking to build a career in our sector?

I have had the pleasure of participating in a few NextGen programs at IMARC and I am encouraged by the growing interest in the resource sector.

The most important piece of advice I give is to grab every opportunity with both hands. So much of what happens in our industry is not in big cities, so be prepared to move during your career and make the most of what you learn from site-based roles. They are the best experiences you can get.

Equally as important is that you have to network! Join AusIMM, your student association, WIMnet, discipline specific associations and get involved in events.
