This talk will discuss the importance of ethics to every AusIMM member, update the membership on the latest Professional Conduct Committee regulations, and talk about the efficacy of current governance procedures.It will pose the questions:
• What do Ethics mean to me as an AusIMM member?
• What is the regulatory and professional environment in which we operate?
• What happens when things go wrong?
• What kind of Ethics breaches occur and what is done about them?
• Could Bre-X happen again?
The talk will be delivered by Matt Mullins, Chair of the AusIMM Ethics Committee and a member of the UK Branch Committee. This talk will be facilitated by Wilma Parsons, UK Branch Committee member.

Matt Mullins
BSc (Hons), FGSSA, FSAIMM, FGSL, Pr Sci Nat
During this career he has worked for major mining companies (ArcelorMittal, BHP, Barrick and Goldfields), for smaller companies like Severin Mining, for consultancies and as a Mining Analyst on the JSE. He is a Director of Tecoma Strategies and an Executive Consultant with Snowden Optiro. Matt has operated in many countries of the World and is a Competent Person / Valuator in most major commodities.
Matt has been involved in industry structures and in resource governance in various capacities. He was President of the Geological Society of South Africa in 2008/09, Chaired the SAMREC Committee from 2004 to 2009, the SAMVAL Committee from 2007 to 2009 and the SAMCODES Standards Committee from 2017 to 2018. He is a Fellow of the AusIMM, of the GSSA, of the SAIMM and of the GSL. He is a Patron of the Natural History Museum in London
Wilma Parsons
She spent 13 years in North America working across exploration, production geology, and resource geology, after studying geology at Queen’s University in Canada and beginning her career as an exploration geologist in Northern Ontario. Wilma has worked across a range of commodities and has led multidisciplinary technical teams throughout her career. From 2021 to 2023, she chaired the Exploration and Resource Functional Committee within the Trafigura mining group.
Wilma moved to the UK in 2023 to join Rio Tinto as a Senior Specialist Geologist, contributing to the Simandou Iron Ore project in Guinea. She is now Operations Manager for Europe, Africa, and North America within BHP’s Exploration group. Her career has spanned multiple regions and operational contexts, reflecting a broad technical grounding and leadership across global exploration activities.
