A view of why for the last decade did the international mining sector deliver so many bad projects, and importantly, how can we stop history repeating itself. Neil Cusworth, who has had a long and distinguished career in projects and project controls, where 40% of his 50 years' experience has been on international mining projects, will be presenting his views on what drives projects to succeed or fail.

Neil is the founding Managing Director of Enthalpy’s Australian, European and South American operations, as an independent Project Management services provider, since 1988.

Neil’s Project Management career has spanned almost four decades. He has worked as a Project Manager – Director on resource projects in most continents. Major projects have included Gordonstone Coal, Minera Alumbrera, Queensland Magnesium, Mt Isa Copper Smelter, sale of the Gladstone Power Station, Emu Downs Wind Farm, Anaconda Murrin Murrin and the OPR – Crosslands Iron Ore project.

He has undertaken a variety of specialist advisory and Independent Peer Review assignments since 1988. Including providing ‘best practice’ systems, procedures and reviews for multinational corporations including BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Antofagasta Minerals, Stanwell Energy, Cliff’s, MIM and Codelco.

Neil is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy. In 2013 Neil was awarded the AusIMM Mining Industry Technique Award.

Brendan Howard

General Manager Technical Capability, Rio Tinto
Brendan is the General Manager Technical Capability, Group Technical at Rio Tinto. Brendan has worked for Rio Tinto for 32 years joining the business as an exploration geologist and spent the first 12 years of his career undertaking exploration programs in the Pilbara, Indonesia, Peru and Canada.

After completing an MBA, Brendan subsequently completed a number of business/corporate development roles for the Diamonds business unit in London, and then for the Rio Tinto India country office. In his current role, Brendan is responsible for leading Rio Tinto’s global technical excellence program, designed to ensure Rio Tinto has the technical capability to safely manage technical risk and deliver the Group strategy.

Brendan is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and has been a member for 20 years.
