The mining industry is under increasing pressure to discover, develop and operate resources in more complex conditions, with higher expectations around safety, sustainability and capital discipline.
This tech talk explores how data, artificial intelligence and automation are reshaping how decisions are made across the mining lifecycle, starting with exploration where uncertainty is high and there is the opportunity for significant value creation.
Drawing on practical industry experience, BHP’s Mikko Tepponen will examine where digital technologies are already improving outcomes today, and where longer-term shifts in systems, integration and ways of working are beginning to redefine how mining decisions are made over time.

Mikko Tepponen
Before joining BHP, Mikko served as Chief Digital Officer and Chief Operations Officer at FLSmidth, where he drove digital transformation and oversaw global manufacturing, IT, quality, and GBS operations as part of the executive leadership team reporting directly to the CEO. Earlier in his career, he led transformation and digital initiatives across the energy, marine, and mining sectors at Wärtsilä and Outotec. Mikko also serves as a Non-Executive Director at Etteplan, a Finnish engineering services company listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange, a role he has held for nine years. During his tenure, he has chaired the Nomination and Compensation Committee and contributed as a member of the Audit Committee
