Since our insightful 2023 webinar with Dr Gerald Wimmer, there have been significant advancements in green steel smelting. Due to the strong interest and positive feedback from our previous session, we are pleased to welcome Dr Wimmer back for another informative update.

This webinar will discuss:

• Reduction of CO2 emission in the iron and steel industry will require a shift from integrated route using blast furnace to direct reduction.
• New types of furnaces will be required to process direct reduced iron made of low grade iron ore due to the high mineral fraction of such ores.
• Possible process routes as well as principles of such new Smelter furnace will be presented and discussed.

Vice President, Converter Steelmaking, Primetals Technologies Austria Dr. Gerald Wimmer knows all there is to know about converter steelmaking. Since joining Primetals Technologies in 2009, his R&D initiatives have resulted in many innovative solutions such as the Vaicon Link converter-suspension system and the Vaicon AOD Damper. Gerald holds a ph.d with the University of Technology of Vienna and a master’s degree in international economics, enabling him to take the entrepreneurial view of a steel producer in addition to understanding the technology at work in a plant.
