Join the Mining Society for their November webinar: Development of polymetallic tailings projects using dredging as a mining method - A way for the effective utilisation of mineral resources.

About this event

Across Australia, numerous tailings dams contain valuable minerals that remain untapped. Advances in dredging and processing technologies now make it possible to recover these resources economically and sustainably, transforming legacy mine waste into profitable operations.

In this webinar, we’ll explore the potential of mining tailings dams using modern dredging and processing techniques. Attendees will gain insight into the technical, environmental, and economic considerations of these projects, as well as real-world examples of successful implementation.

Our expert speakers, Dr Rossen Halatchev and Dr Deliana Gabeva, bring firsthand experience from the Ore Reserve estimation of the Hellyer Tailings Retreatment Project in Tasmania - a pioneering example of how careful planning and innovative methods can turn a challenge into an opportunity.

Webinar time: 5.00pm - 6.00pm AEDT.

Speaker/s

Dr Rossen Halatchev

FAusIMM
Principal Mining Consultant
Dr Rossen Halatchev is a qualified Mining Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in Mining Engineering. Currently, he is a Principal Mining Consultant providing services in mine design and planning. An accomplished researcher recognised for his world-class research innovations in open-pit mine planning.
Rossen worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland and participated in a large ARC project focused on the strategic mine planning problems of open-pit mines. He developed a highly effective production scheduling method, which successfully implements a new mine planning principle named the principle of waste deferment. His method produces a new schedule type with multi-stage stabilization of mining rate and has the potential to significantly increase the NPV and ore reserve of any open-pit mine or project. The research career of Rossen got further development with the Queensland University of Technology and CRCMining, where he worked on projects dedicated to the problems of open-pit coal production scheduling optimizations, rock–mine equipment interaction, and mining project risk modelling.
The operational experience of Rossen includes his work for Anglo Coal as a Senior Mine Planning Engineer on a mine site in Queensland; Bayan Resources in Indonesia as a Manager Mine Planning and Development for six open-pit coal mines; Vale Australia as a Senior Mine Planning Engineer being in charge for Integra open-pit coal mine; Ma’aden Saudi Arabian Mining Company as an Expert Business Performance, and St Barbara Simberi Gold Operations in PNG as a Superintendent Mine Planning.

Dr Deliana Gabeva

MAusIMM
Managing Director and Principal Consultant Geology and Hydrogeology, AusGEMCO
Dr Deliana Gabeva is the Managing Director and Principal Consultant Geology and Hydrogeology at AusGEMCO Pty Ltd. She is a valued expert, renowned for her contributions to mining, energy, and environmental sectors. Her educational background is distinguished by a PhD in Geology and Hydrogeology, complemented by a Master of Science in Engineering Geology.
Deliana’s expertise spans groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling. She developed stochastic groundwater contaminant transport modelling techniques for heterogeneous and fractured media when she worked at the University of Queensland. In 2017, she graduated in Project Management from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane.
Throughout her career, Deliana has held pivotal roles in organisations like AusGEMCO Pty Ltd, CSIRO, HydroGeo Technology, Linc Energy Ltd, and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Notable achievements include management of JORC-compliant Mineral Resource & Ore Reserve estimations and environmental assessments for various open-pit and underground mines in Australia, Europe, Canada and Asia.
Deliana's proficiency in Resource Geology and Hydrogeology, coupled with her membership in the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), underscores her leadership in the field. As a long-standing member of AusIMM, she loves sharing her experience and knowledge with colleagues and contributing to the implementation of new technologies and innovative solutions in the field of mineral resource and reserve estimation, water resources, critical minerals and rare earth elements.
