Coal continues to play a significant role in Australia’s energy mix, regional economies, and export markets, even as the national and global energy landscape evolves. In this session, Stuart Bocking, Chief Executive Officer of Coal Australia, will provide a broad outlook on the future of NSW coal, the challenges and opportunities ahead and the sectors importance in Australia shifting energy context.

Coal Australia positions itself as a membership-based industry group representing people and companies committed to building a secure future for Australian coal, emphasising its economic importance and its ongoing global and domestic demand. Under Stuart’s leadership, the organisation works to strengthen engagement in coal regions and champion the industry’s contributions to manufacturing, regional development, and reliable energy supply.

Stuart Bocking

Chief Executive Officer of Coal Australia
Stuart Bocking is the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Coal Australia, bringing over 30 years of experience across media, law, and government relations to the role. He developed strong communication skills in his broadcasting years with 2UE and 2GB. He later served as a senior advisor in the New South Wales Government, focusing on mining, resources, and environmental policy. As a lawyer, he has worked on resource projects, particularly in planning and approvals.
Appointed in December 2024, Stuart leads Coal Australia, an industry group that has attracted over 115,000 members. He is a vocal advocate for the coal industry, emphasising its economic significance and the need for a balanced energy policy. Under his leadership, Coal Australia has launched grassroots campaigns to engage communities and highlight the role of coal in energy security and regional development.
