$53 Million Investment Boosts Australia’s Critical Minerals Refining Capability

The Australian Government has announced a $53 million investment in the Critical Metals for Critical Industries Cooperative Research Centre (CMCI CRC), strengthening Australia’s ability to refine and process critical minerals domestically. Delivered through the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program, the funding will support the development and commercialisation of innovative refining technologies essential to clean energy, defence and advanced manufacturing.
Australia is rich in critical minerals and rare earths, which play a vital role in the global transition to a low‑carbon economy. The CMCI CRC will focus on high‑value minerals, breakthrough technologies and more sustainable refining methods, helping Australia capture greater value from its world‑class mineral resources while reducing reliance on offshore processing.
The initiative is expected to deliver long‑term economic benefits by creating skilled jobs, supporting new export opportunities and positioning Australia as a trusted global supplier of responsibly refined critical metals. Collaboration sits at the heart of the CRC’s approach, bringing together industry, research organisations and government to accelerate innovation and deliver real‑world outcomes.
Supporting partners, including Rozetta Institute and Mining3, are contributing to the development of the CRC’s Stage 2 bid under Round 26 of the CRC Program, reinforcing the focus on sovereign capability, innovation and national benefit.
