Native seed supply for restoration and mine site rehabilitation

This workshop will discuss the principles and present new scientific and practical outcomes to strengthen each step of the native seed supply chain.

Native seeds are a key component of most ecological restoration projects. The International Network for Seed-Based Restoration (INSR), a thematic section of the Society of Ecological Restoration (SER), in collaboration with a wide range of international experts, has developed the First International Standards for Native Seeds in Ecological Restoration (2020). In this series of papers, each step of the native seed supply chain is analysed in depth and recommendations on how to improve the science and practice underpinning the reliable supply and effective use of native seeds are provided. Since the Native Seed Standards were published, numerous researchers and practitioners (from around the world) have been performing experiments and developing new methodologies and technologies to address the major bottlenecks in the native seed supply chain. The presenters are currently planning a new CRC TIME project for training site environmental teams on native seed supply.

The workshop will focus on robust ecological and economic solutions implemented with industry, along with micro credential training pathways for First Nations communities.

Presenters:

Dr Simone Pedrini

Presenter
Simone Pedrini is a senior lecturer in environmental restoration at the School of Molecular and Life Sciences a Curtin University and project lead of the Native Seed Technology and Innovation Hub for Western Australia. His primary focus is optimising the native seed supply chain for ecological restoration, from seed collection and production, seed processing, quality testing, dormancy treatment, seed enhancement, and seed use in the field. He was the co-founder and managing director of the first Italian native plant nursery and seed supplier, Flora Conservation (2012 to 2015). He obtained a PhD in "Seed enhancement technology application to native seeds" from Curtin University (2015-2019). Simone is a certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner, Past-Chair of the International Network for Seed-Based Restoration and Co-founder and advisor of the European Native Seed Producers Association.

Clara Schmidt

Presenter
Clara Schmidt is a postgraduate research student in plant science, specialising in climate resilient seed production. Her current research focuses on producing genetically healthy seed in seed production systems to support restoration needs. Clara is passionate about collaborative research that advances Indigenous sovereignty over their traditional plants.
