Training Workshop on Site Characterisation
This workshop will cover: CPT, DMT, Vane Shear Testing, undisturbed and other sampling. The focus will be characterisation of soft and very soft tailings materials. Particular emphasis will be given to potential and likely sources of error in characterisation, and practices and methods that can (should) be applied to overcome these.

Allan McConnell is an experienced geotechnical engineer; Founder of the in situ testing company Insitu Geotech Services (IGS); Fellow of Engineers Australia (1990); Registered Professional Engineer (1977); Committee Member of the Australian Geomechanics Society; and Committee Member of the Queensland Tailings Group.

Marcelo es Ingeniero Geotécnico Principal con experiencia brindando servicios de consultoría geotécnica a grandes proyectos en Oceanía, Sudamérica y Europa. Ha dirigido revisiones de seguridad de presas, revisiones independientes, investigaciones de campo, cumplimiento de GISTM y evaluaciones de ruptura hipotética de presas para una amplia gama de presas de agua y relaves. Además, ha publicado y/o presentado 50 artículos en congresos y revistas internacionales y recibido más de 300 citaciones. Los aspectos más destacados de su trabajo incluyen los roles de ingeniero residente de diseño para la planificación, coordinación, ejecución e interpretación de varias pruebas de campo para el diseño de viabilidad de una ataguía/barrera corta flujo de 2 km de largo y 55 m de profundidad en un entorno complejo, remoto, tropical, sísmico y geotérmico.
Tierney Boulter

Tierney is Australian General Manager of the international in situ testing company Conetec. She has >12 years experience hands-on and in management in in situ testing and direct-push sampling; 8 years of this time was spent in the “geotechnically challenging” Canadian oil sands industry.
Mark Chapman
Presenter
Mark Chapman, Managing Director of Insitu Geotech Services (IGS), is a respected expert in the geotechnical engineering sector. He holds a Master of Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering from UNSW and Bachelor of Civil Engineering from RMIT University.
Robert William (Billy) Burke
Presenter
BSc from Melbourne University, MEngSc (Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology) from UNSW. Director of Black Geotechnical and Black Insitu Testing. Co-founded Black Insitu Testing in 2008 from a desire to improve the availability of high-quality in-situ testing in Victoria.
David Williams
Presenter
Professor David Williams initiated and directs the Geotechnical Engineering Centre at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and also manages the industry-funded Large Open Pit Project. He has over 40 years of teaching, research and consulting experience.
