Bobbi-Jay Macqueen
AAusIMM, Geologist, BHP
My name is Bobbi-Jay Macqueen and I am a practicing mine Geologist for BHP in the Bowen Basin. I graduated a Bachelor of Geology from James Cook University in 2016 and have been actively working in the industry for over four years. Currently I am a member of the BBGG and an Associate member for AusIMM.
My inspiration to purse a geological career came from my introduction into the resources industry working as a Laboratory Technician for ALS. I achieved a diploma in Laboratory Techniques and was exposed to basic metallurgical theory and processes. After completing my bachelor’s degree I began my career as a graduate geologist with Map To Mine. This role introduced me to general geological processes within the exploration space. The work involved included office based tasks such as data compilation and validation, and also field work duties such as mapping and sampling.
I was fortunate enough to gain employment with BHP through their graduate program after my time at Map to Mine. Through my time at BHP I have worked as both a site based mine Geologist and also a member of the geoscience planning and technical team based in the Brisbane head office. I currently find myself based at South Walker Creek in the Bowen Basin where I am the site Mine Geologist. Core tasks include modelling, coal recovery, pit inspections and mapping, as well as compiling geological data for mining reviews.
As a STEM professional, I have volunteered for several events so far in my early career through BHP. Some of these range from QMEA or the BHP Foundation events, as well as for the Queensland Museum Loan Kits project. I am looking forward to continuing my involvement in the resources industry and encouraging the younger generation to pursue a career in geoscience.
