About this event

Speaker: Associate Professor John Culton – the Director of the University of Adelaide's Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources.

Topic: Using the resources of space to support human exploration.

Summary: John studied science and engineering at the US Air Force Academy and since 2011 has been involved internationally in the space sector, with a focus on the intersection of space policy, law, regulation, and technology as it relates to the use of space resources and its critical role in supporting long-term human presence beyond low-Earth orbit.

He is a champion of the Australian Rover Challenge (ARC) which is running again in 2022 in Adelaide and features university students building, operating and competing their semi-autonomous rovers in a simulated lunar environment, accomplishing navigation, resource utilisation, and construction tasks while assisted and mentored by international industry and government partners.

The event will also feature a student presentation from Mistrel Fetzer Boegheim.

Topic: Felsic volcanism in the Northern Peak Range Province: Peraluminous Implications for tertiary REE mineralisation in Central Queensland.

Associate Professor John Culton

Director of the University of Adelaide's “Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources”
John studied science and engineering at the US Air Force Academy and since 2011 has been involved internationally in the space sector, with a focus on the intersection of space policy, law, regulation, and technology as it relates to the use of space resources and its critical role in supporting long-term human presence beyond low-Earth orbit.

Following commissioning, he served 27 years stationed around the globe, leaving the defence forces in 2018 as a Colonel following a career as a special operations pilot, intelligence officer, and U.S. diplomat.

He is a co-founder of the Australian Rover Challenge (ARC) which is running again in 2022 in Adelaide and features university students building, operating and competing their semi-autonomous rovers in a simulated lunar environment, accomplishing navigation, resource utilisation, and construction tasks while assisted and mentored by international industry and government partners.
