Summary: Ben will discuss the latest technological developments in SMR’s, their various use cases for power generation in Australia (with a focus on SA), and the remaining challenges in setting harmonised regulations that will support the SMR business mode.

The event will also feature student presentations from Reuben Downie and Josiah Park.

Student Speaker: Reuben Downie – Adelaide University

Topic: Optimisation of energy utilisation of steelmaking process: Slag heat utilisation via methane reforming.

Student Speaker: Josiah Park – Adelaide University

Topic: Hydrothermal alteration of the Carrapateena deposit.

This event is brought to you by the AusIMM Adelaide Branch, our 2021 Branch Partners of Bureau Veritas & OZ Minerals and our 2021 Technical Lunch Partner, Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Ben Heard

Senior Consultant, Frazer-Nash Consultancy
Dr Ben Heard is a senior consultant at Frazer-Nash Consultancy, an international systems engineering firm, and arguably Australia’s best recognised and most experienced advocate for the beneficial uses of nuclear technologies. He is an energy analyst and modeller (University of Adelaide), and a masters-qualified sustainability professional (Monash University).

Ben has delivered reviews of economic opportunities in the nuclear fuel cycle, proposals for advanced reactor and recycling project appended to used fuel storage, and a review of the environmental performance of the Australian uranium sector. He recently authored the discussion paper Small Modular Reactors in the Australian Context, and two chapters of the compendium An Australian Nuclear Industry – Starting with Submarines?

He has authored award-winning and highly-shared peer-reviewed papers discussing the challenges of energy transitions and the role for nuclear technologies. He was a member of the Public Advisory Panel for the siting of Australia’s low-and-intermediate level waste store and repository, and is an environmental advisor to Terrestrial Energy, the Canadian-based developer of the Integral Molten Salt Reactor. A regular contributor to print, radio and TV media, he featured as one of the global voices in the film ‘Juice: How Electricity Explains the World’, and brought the world inside the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station on a top rated episode of 60 Minutes.

His broader sustainability experience includes renewable energy systems, climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable transport, and stakeholder consultation, including economic and business case development with multi-disciplinary teams.

Reuben Downie

Adelaide University
Reuben is completing his double degree in chemical engineering (honours) and finance this year. He currently works in in-situ recovery of uranium and his research project assesses opportunities in heat recovery and utilisation from slag in the iron and steelmaking process, and how this could be combined with other new technologies such as direct iron reduction to reduce the carbon footprint of steel.

Josiah Park

Adelaide University
Josiah is a passionate developing geologist, and through his studies at the University of Adelaide has enjoyed going on fieldwork, to places such as Tasmania, Oman and across much of South Australia. He is currently completing his honours project based around the Carrapateena deposit, specifically the hydrothermal alteration characteristics of the host rock surrounding.
