Adelaide Hills Wine Region Sundowner
Join the Adelaide Branch for their Adelaide Hills Wine Region Sundowner event.
About this event
Join us for a captivating evening where geology, viticulture and sensory experience collide. Geologist Mick Roche and Viticulturist Andrew Pike will take attendees on a journey through the ancient geological foundations of the Adelaide Hills before focusing on the unique vineyard setting of the Pike & Joyce site at Lenswood.
This Sundowner will enhance your understanding of the region’s geology, uncover the science behind terroir, and guide you through a tasting of Pike & Joyce wines that showcase the flavours shaped by their geological origins.
The Adelaide Hills GI spans around 1,500 km², with approximately 4,000 hectares under vine. Two notable sub-regions - Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley - are recognised for their distinctive soils and climatic variations, ideal for varieties such as chardonnay, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and shiraz.
The Pike & Joyce vineyard sits atop the Saddleworth Formation, a sequence of mudstones, siltstones and carbonaceous shales belonging to the 750-million-year-old Burra Group. These lithologies influence soil characteristics, drainage, vine vigour and, ultimately, the structure and expression of the wines produced.
If you’ve ever wondered why winemakers chase fruit from cool‑climate vineyards, this is your chance to hear from geology and viticulture experts - exactly why.
Enjoy conversation, networking and wine tastings with fellow professionals, students, enthusiasts and friends.
