Join the Melbourne Branch for their August tech talk: Geotechnical and geometallurgical applications of machine learning in the mining industry.

About this event

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are driving significant advancements in geotechnical engineering and geometallurgy within the mining industry.

In geotechnical applications, ML enables the automated extraction of structural and lithological information from core imagery, Televiewer, and face or wall mapping. This improves the spatial coverage, consistency, and quality of data feeding into geotechnical models.

In geometallurgy, ML is facilitating a step change toward predictive geometallurgy, where models built on abundant datasets such as mineralogy, multi-element geochemistry, and downhole geophysics are used to predict metallurgical performance across both ore and host rocks at a scale and speed not previously possible.

This presentation will highlight several case studies demonstrating how ML and data analytics are being applied in both geotechnical and geometallurgical contexts to support better decision-making and operational efficiency.

Speaker/s

Brenton Crawford

Chief Geoscientist, Chief Technologist, Datarock
Brenton Crawford is the Chief Geoscientist/Technologist at Datarock, a company he co-founded in 2019 to deliver production-scale computer vision solutions for the exploration and mining industry. With a background in structural geology and geophysics from Monash University, Brenton has held diverse roles across mine geology, geophysics, and exploration. He has consulted with PGN Geoscience and worked as a geophysicist and data scientist at MMG Exploration, contributing to nickel, copper, and zinc projects. In 2015, he co-founded Solve Geosolutions, Australia’s first data science consultancy dedicated to the mining and exploration sector. Brenton brings a multidisciplinary perspective at the intersection of geoscience and technology.
