The AusIMM Central Victoria Branch welcomes you to join us for another year at Henry of Harcourt for our Annual Meeting. Come and hear about 2022 in review, elect the 2023 committee, and hear from our guest speakers on Australia's Third Gold Boom from 1982 onwards - a brief analysis.

About this event

Marking the start of another year of events, this evening brings the Branch together to network, review the year that was, and focus on the upcoming local opportunities.

The Branch is pleased to announce that following the Annual Meeting Dr Sandra Close and Jim Pollock from Surbiton Associates Pty Ltd will provide a technical talk on Australia's Third Gold Boom from 1982 onwards - a brief analysis.

The evening kicks off with a networking BBQ and drinks overlooking the lake, runs through the Annual Meeting and committee elections, before closing with the technical talk.

Please come along to support the Branch, hear about our activities past and future, and potential volunteer on the committee.

For any inquiries or info on joining the committee please feel free to contact us at centralvic@ausimm.com.au

We look forward to welcoming you there.

Speaker/s

Dr Sandra Close

Surbiton Associates Pty Ltd
Sandra Close graduated in Economic Geology in 1967 and was Australia’s first, full-time, female exploration geologist employed by a company. She worked for CRA Exploration (now Rio Tinto) for around a decade in all states of Australia and was also seconded to the USA and Ireland.

She joined the Australian Resources Development Bank in 1976 as a technical specialist and banker, financing multi-million dollar resource projects. She was then employed by Shell for a decade in finance, strategy, planning and general management roles, before leaving to set up Surbiton Associates, a small mining consultancy specialising in gold.

Her PhD thesis examined the reasons behind the enormous rise in Australia’s gold output during the first two decades of the current gold boom and compared this with the boom of the 1890s/1900s, including parallels in technology and economics.
Dr Close has been a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for some 56 years, having served in a number of capacities at Branch and Committee level and also as an AusIMM Councillor and later Board member for 13 years. She was made an Honorary Fellow of the AusIMM in 2012-2013 (the first female Honorary Fellow in the 125-year history of the AusIMM) and was awarded the Sir Willis Connolly Medal for Communications in 2013. She is currently Chair of the AusIMM Heritage Committee. She is HonFAusIMM CP.

Her first book, “The Great Gold Renaissance”, covering the 1980s and 1990s, was probably the first technical book published on the Australian gold industry in more than 100 years. Her second book “Australia’s Greatest Gold Boom” has just been released, covering the period from 2000, together with a Second Edition of “The Great Gold Renaissance.”

Jim Pollock

Surbiton Associates
Jim Pollock graduated in Economic Geology from the University of Sydney in 1966.

After working as a geologist in Australia, Papua New Guinea, the UK and Iran, he worked for a period in the City of London as a mining analyst. He undertook an MBA at the University of London (City) specialising in Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management before returning to Australia in 1975 to work in mining investment for share brokers and financial institutions.

In 1979, he joined the Economics Department of BHP as Senior Minerals Economist in BHP’s head office at 140 William Street Melbourne and later took up roles in planning and evaluation in BHP.

In the early 1990s he became the inaugural mining journalist and hard commodities’ specialist for Bloomberg News, the wire service created by multi-billionaire and former Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg. Later, he joined Sandra Close as statistician for Surbiton Associates Pty Ltd.

He has been a corporate member of the AusIMM for around 46 years and is currently FAusIMM CP.
