John Lawrie

Retired Soil Scientist
In 1971 John conducted a soil survey for the Condobolin and surrounding districts for the Soil Conservation Service and was then transferred to Broken Hill until 1981 to collect and provide soils information for Land System Maps of Western NSW (West of Darling River) and to prepare property plans for graziers and assist them repairing degraded land with tyne pitting and other revegetation trials
He was also asked to give advice on rehabilitating mined land around Broken Hill.
He then in 1981 absconded to Weipa in Northern QLD to regenerate Comalco’s bauxite mined land.
Later in 1986 he was asked to come back to Soil Conservation Service at Wellington to set up the soil survey unit and map the rest of the soils in Central and Eastern NSW and later on he was involved in preparing farm plans and giving farmers advice on how to make the best use of their soils.
Currently Peter and John and part of a group of retired soil scientists (NSW Soils Network) who volunteer their time to help farmers better understand their soil’s and to stimulate and encourage young soil scientists.

Peter Walker

Retired Soil Scientist
Lived and worked at Cobar from 1970 till 1981, with the Soil Conservation Service of NSW.
Involved in soil and vegetation surveys of properties, land system mapping, about 600 soil profile descriptions, soil survey along the natural gas pipeline trench, soil and vegetation studies at a contour furrowing trial site south of the Peak, woody weed prescribed burning and a few other trials.
Later based at Condobolin, working across the Western Division and oversaw the land system mapping program and put together the descriptions document
Currently Peter and John and part of a group of retired soil scientists (NSW Soils Network ) who volunteer their time to help farmers better understand their soil’s and to stimulate and encourage young soil scientists.
