Susan Johnston

Program Leader – Governance and Leadership
Susan Johnston heads the Governance and Leadership Program at The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI).

Previously, Susan held a variety of resources sector leadership roles including as global and national head of safety and health for the then Anglo Coal, CEO of the Queensland Resources Council, Member of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority Advisory Board, and as a senior executive within the then Queensland Departments of Mines and Energy, and Premiers.

Susan has advised governments, industry, and unions on safety legislation, and mine safety more generally. She led the Review of Mine Safety in New South Wales, and recently assessed Queensland mining safety laws for the Commissioner for Mine Safety and Health.

Susan’s current work includes considering how High Reliability Organisational thinking might be applied to regulators. Susan has been admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
