The AusIMM New Professionals Network is pleased to announce the upcoming captivating webinar featuring Sophie Davies, Decarbonisation Delivery Lead at Fortescue. Sophie will be addressing the crucial topic of "What is Net Zero, why is it important, and how should we get there?"

Sophie Davies brings a wealth of experience to the table, having spent nearly half a decade at Fortescue, where she has been instrumental in driving significant transformations within the company. Her expertise encompasses change management, technology implementations, and sustainability initiatives, particularly in decarbonisation efforts.

In her current role, Sophie leads the Decarbonisation Delivery team, where she oversees the implementation of innovative green equipment and energy systems at Fortescue's iron ore operations in the Pilbara. Notably, Sophie played a pivotal role in delivering Australia's first electric excavator to Fortescue's Cloudbreak operations, highlighting the company's commitment to environmentally friendly technologies in the mining sector.

During the webinar, Sophie will delve into several key areas, including:

  • Climate change fundamentals, distinguishing between net zero and Fortescue’s real zero by 2030 targets
  • Fortescue’s evolution into a global green technology, energy, and metals company
    Strategies for decarbonising Fortescue’s Pilbara operations

Sophie Davies

Decarbonisation Delivery Lead, Fortescue
Approaching half a decade at Fortescue, Sophie has been at the forefront of major transformations within the company. Her expertise spans change management, transformational technology implementations, and most notably, sustainability and decarbonisation initiatives.

In her current role, Sophie forms part of the Decarbonisation Delivery team, entrusted with the critical responsibility of overseeing the implementation of all new green equipment and energy systems at Fortescue's iron ore operations in the Pilbara.

One of Sophie’s recent achievements includes orchestrating the delivery of Australia's first electric excavator to Fortescue's Cloudbreak operations last year. The successful collaboration with the operational teams in the Pilbara underpins Fortescue’s commitment to advancing environmentally friendly technologies in the mining sector.

Looking ahead, Sophie is enthusiastic about the upcoming projects on her agenda, which will continue to focus on the introduction of electrified Heavy Mining Equipment (HME) and the creation of a Decarb Delivery Framework to outline new ways of working to respond to the challenges associated with electrified mining, to support Fortescue to reach their Real Zero by 2030 target.
