About this event

The Phase 14a Wall Stabilisation Project is a key component of Newmont’s ongoing expansion of the Lihir Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea.

The project enables the safe extraction of high‑grade ore through the stabilisation of a critical section of the open‑pit wall beneath Ailaya Hill, a culturally significant site.

This technical talk, presented by  Robert Vuurens, a senior infrastructure and resources executive, will highlight to the audience, the civil construction methodologies employed within the mining operation to deliver the largest anchored slope in the Southern Hemisphere, constructed over a four‑year period.

Speaker/s

Robert Vuurens

Robert Vuurens is a senior infrastructure and resources executive with over two decades of international experience delivering complex mining, energy and civil infrastructure projects across Australia, PNG, the Middle East, Asia and Europe, with proven accountability for portfolios exceeding AUD 400 million.

Robert currently serves as Project Director and National Sector Lead (Dams, Tailings & Mining) with Menard Oceania (VINCI Construction) in Australia, responsible for sector growth, operational performance and governance across a portfolio of mining and geotechnical infrastructure projects. He recently led delivery of a major joint venture project for Newmont at the Lihir Gold Mine in PNG, overseeing a workforce of more than 300 personnel reporting directly to the JV Board.

Prior roles include Project Director for marine and infrastructure works within the NEOM mega-project in Saudi Arabia, General Manager at Gulf Laboratories, and senior project management roles with FLUOR on large-scale EPCM programs for tier-one clients including BHP.

Robert holds an MSc in Mining and Petroleum Engineering from Delft University of Technology, an Executive MBA from HEC Paris, and is a PMP and Chartered Engineer.
