About this event

What’s a better way to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Mount Isa then to visit a slice of it’s past?

The AusIMM North-West Queensland’s Branch in recognition of 100 years of mining in Mount Isa. Celebrate by hosting an event at Mount Isa’s Underground Hospital & Museum to showcase the region’s early history.

We will also hear from special guest Narelle Wolfe; Head of Professional Standards, Sustainability and ESG for AusIMM.

Come and join your peers on a twilight tour of Australia’s first and only underground Hospital that was built in 1942 after the Darwin bombings. In concern for the Mount Isa region, a collaboration between the Hospital and Mount Isa Mines, formed the idea of an underground hospital. Over a period of 15 weeks and with the immense effort by volunteer miners the idea became reality.

This tour will also allow you a unique insight into 1940s medical and nursing technology and the local improvisation during wartime. It also showcases the mining technology of the mid-20th century.
