Mine closure liabilities – Understanding the true exposure

Join the Sydney Branch for their June tech talk: Mine closure liabilities – Understanding the true exposure.

About this event

Mining activity creates liabilities from a financial, environmental and social perspective that mining companies are legally and ethically obliged to address during the closure process. These liabilities may include ecosystem restoration, site rehabilitation, waste containment, site cleanup, social transition programs, infrastructure removal and ongoing monitoring.

Despite growing awareness and regulatory frameworks, a significant number of mining operations globally lack adequate closure provisions. Many companies underestimate the true cost of closure or fail to set aside sufficient financial resources during the operational phase, leading to funding shortfalls when mines close. There are many root causes of under-provisioning – these include optimism bias, deterministic cost modelling, developing regulatory frameworks, short term focus, lack of oversight and delayed closure planning, amongst others. This widespread under-provisioning creates risks to mining companies, governments and communities.

This session will explore mine closure liabilities, how they are estimated and the impacts of under-provisioning within the mining industry. It will include case studies from Australia and overseas, and highlight emerging trends in environmental governance, investor scrutiny, and industry best practices aimed at improving closure planning, accountability and provisioning.
