Australian Government updates Critical Minerals List

The Australian Government has updated its Critical Minerals List and created a new Strategic Materials List to include aluminium, copper, nickel, zinc, phosphorous and tin.

As covered in the government’s media release announcing the changes, the new Strategic Materials List identifies commodities essential for the energy transition, but which are not necessarily at risk of supply chain disruptions.

In August 2023, AusIMM provided its recommendations on the list in its submission to the Federal Government.

The release of the updated list in December 2023 follows Minister King’s appearance at AusIMM’s Critical Minerals Conference in November, where the Minister and AusIMM CEO Stephen Durkin explored the future of the Australian sector.
