Unlocking the Value of Structural Geology in Mining, Exploration & 3D Modelling
SRK will host this structural geology and 3D modelling short course. In this one-day course, participants will develop skills in structural data collection and interpretation through hands-on practical exercises using drill core samples and structural data from real deposits.
Participants will learn how to integrate applied structural geology with 3D geological modelling and gain confidence in effective application of structural geology in near-mine, brownfields or greenfields exploration and for resource estimation. The course will cover the following topics:
Morning: Data Collection & Interpretation
- Structural Geology Tools of the Trade
- Getting Value from Structural Geology
- Measuring and acquisition methodology in the field and using drill core
- Effective QAQC of structural data
Afternoon: Using Structural Data & 3D Modelling
- How to analyse, interpret and visualise structural data in stereographic nets and in 3D (20 min practical to follow)
- A better understanding of structure and deposit geology through 3D integration and modelling (embedding measurements into models)
- Structural Geology models what does good look like from a Geotech perspective
Workshop Presenters
Richard Moody, BSc (Earth Science), MAusIMM
Richard is a geologist with over 25 years of experience delivering projects end-to-end, with strengths in process optimisation, stakeholder management, and the full geological information cycle (planning, execution, modelling and communication). He has led teams and contractors, and has demonstrated expertise in 3D geological modelling, structural input to geotechnical risk assessment, estimation, project management, QAQC for mining and exploration, meeting facilitation, and stakeholder engagement. Since joining SRK, Richard has completed peer and structural reviews with associated model updates for multiple channel iron deposit, Marra Mamba and Brockman iron ore deposits using Leapfrog, Vulcan, Geology Core, Wellcad, Dips, acQuire, ArcGIS Pro and in-house tools, with full reporting and formal model handovers.
Joyjit Dey, PhD (Structural Geology), MSc (Geology), MSc (Geology), MAIG - Consultant
Joyjit’s experience in structural geology to date involves using a multidisciplinary/multi-scale approach that integrates key geological information from regional to deposit-scale litho-structural mapping, 3D modelling, core logging and geochemical analysis to highlight mineralisation control and support exploration. Joyjit has worked with a range of commodities – namely zinc, lead, gold, copper, iron, coal, and lithium – in a number of regions and mineral provinces within India, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Australia, the UK and Europe.
David Hu, MEngSci (Geotechnical Engineering), BSc Hons (Structural Geology), MAusIMM, FGS – Senior Consultant
David has over 8 years of experience in mining geotechnics and engineering geology. David has a broad knowledge base in both mining geotechnics and structural geology to develop mine geotechnical designs, especially in challenging structural settings. His experience spans open pit slope design and stability assessment, geotechnical model development, rock mass characterisation, interpretation of structural and geophysical data and site investigation. David has experience in technical studies and reviews in Australia and worldwide across the full mining life cycle, including conceptual to pre-feasibility and feasibility studies as well as design implementation in operating mines. These include iron ore, copper-gold, lithium, nickel and other commodities. David is proficient in geotechnical and engineering geological modelling, such as 2D and 3D limit equilibrium and finite element analyses, and 3D geological modelling. He has also undertaken geotechnical investigation and design for underground mining operations, tunnelling, and pumped hydroelectricity scheme projects.
