Why you should submit an abstract - from an award winning presenter

In 2024, IGO Limited’s Tim McCreddon and Craig Fitzmaurice were recognised with the Best Paper Award at the Mill Operators Conference.

We caught up with Tim to hear his insights on why submitting an abstract and presenting at the conference is such a valuable opportunity.

1.  What inspired you to submit your abstract to Mill Ops last year?

The project was a story worth telling. It was highly successful both financially and technically. The Mill Ops conference was the right platform to share such a story.

2.  How did presenting at the conference impact your research or professional journey?

At the time of presenting, I was transitioning to a new job, so it gave me increased confidence moving into that role. Additionally, writing and presenting the paper provided an opportunity to improve my technical communication skills.

3. What did winning the Best Paper Award mean to you?

It was rewarding. It represented a form of acknowledgement for all parties that made the project and paper happen. Blood, sweat and tears went into both.

4. What advice would you give to someone thinking about submitting an abstract this year?

Your project, case study or technology is likely interesting to a wider audience and doesn’t have to be a neat/tidy success story. Submit an abstract early and spend time crafting the paper to communicate the message best.

5. Why do you think Mill Operators Conference is a great platform for sharing innovative work?

Mill Ops is an excellent conference as it is the intersection of good ideas and practical implementation. The structure and guidelines for the papers allows space to tell a story while maintaining the quality of publications.
