Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Red Earth Engineering Pty Ltd

Marcelo is a Registered Professional Engineer in Queensland since 2018, with significant experience providing geotechnical consulting services to large projects in Australia, Papua New Guinea and South America.

Marcelo has a solid technical background; his expertise includes using his fore-front large-deformation numerical modelling skills to simulate the failure of the Brumadinho Dam in Brazil; his failure model using material point method (MPM) techniques was included in one of the expert panel’s report.

He has been involved in multiple dam safety reviews, third-party reviews, site investigations, GISTM compliance and gap assessments for many tailings and water retention structures. Moreover, he has published and/or presented more than 30 papers in international conferences and journals, and his work has received over 200 citations.

Highlights of his consulting work include the resident and design engineer roles for planning, coordination, execution and interpretation of various field trials for the feasibility design of a 2 km long, 55 m deep cofferdam in a complex remote, tropical, seismic and geothermal environment.

Being fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Marcelo has learned to be effective in cross-cultural communication and excels on the international stage.
