The Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) 2023 Conference
The Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) is pleased to once again stage their flagship conference which showcases the latest developments in the dams industry.
This year’s theme “Dams: a Critical Resource” provides an insight into the importance of these structures to our collective health and prosperity. Whether viewed through the lens of water supply, energy production or minerals processing, dams play a vital role in sustaining humanity. For the first time, there will be a full day workshop followed by three days of technical sessions, providing attendees ample opportunity to learn from eminent and knowledgeable authorities within the industry. Supported by a splendid social program, the event promises to be a highlight on the calendar of all dams professionals.
Building on the success of the 2022 event in Sydney, the organising committee for 2023 have placed a renewed focus on exploring the multiple industries and disciplines that dams engineering encompasses. This is reflected in the topics and themes that will be addressed in both the pre-conference workshop (24 October) and technical conference sessions (25-27 October).
The workshop will include discussion of the following aspects with respect to tailings facilities and water storages:
• Dam Safety
• Outlet Works
• Spillways
• Reinforced Concrete Structures
Further, the conference sessions will explore the following subthemes:
• Low emissions energy - role of dams in facilitating the transition
• Tailings Dams - current and future challenges
• Securing future resources - design and construction of new and upgraded resilient dams
• Sustainable dams - Environmental/Social/Governance (ESG) strategies & planning
• Dam infrastructure - installing and managing mechanical, electrical, communication & instrumentation equipment
• Dam Operations - flood mitigation, business risk, resourcing and measuring good practice, emergency planning & incident management
• People - continuity & succession planning, capability, certification, regulation, training
• Leveraging data and technology innovations
A snapshot of the keynote speakers includes:
• Len Murray – Klohn Crippen Berger
• Kiri Parr – Kiri Parr Consulting
• Arnold Dix – International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association
• Chris Gwynne – Queensland Hydro
• Andrew Chapman – Queensland Major Contractors Association
Advancing excellence in dams technical practice and the management of dams in Australia is a key driver for ANCOLD and will be the cornerstone of the conference. The event will benefit and inform attendees from government agencies, dam owners and operators, contractors, consultancies and academic institutions alike.
On behalf of the organising committee, we look forward to seeing you in Cairns in October!
