AusIMM offers critical insights on Queensland's Abandoned Mines Policy
We're proud to share that AusIMM has made a significant contribution to the Queensland Government's Draft Abandoned Mines Re-Commercialisation Principles.
Our submission, dated 7 April 2025, underscores our commitment to fostering enduring social, environmental, and economic value through the proactive management of post-mining land.
We engaged a range of subject matter experts from our membership, including specialists from our Social and Environment Society, as well as our Geomechanics and Consultants societies. Their collective insights informed our key recommendations, which advocate for a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework for all post-mining land use, an integrated and place-based planning approach, aligned public support for re-commercialisation, and vital investment in a skilled professional workforce.
"Our members' expertise in post-mining land use is unparalleled, and their contributions are vital in ensuring these principles deliver genuine public benefit and environmental improvement," said AusIMM CEO Stephen Durkin. "We commend the Queensland Government's commitment to this important area and believe that achieving productive post-mining land uses is a shared responsibility across industry, government, and local communities."
We look forward to continuing this crucial dialogue, including through planned policy-development forums at our upcoming Life of Mine and Mine Waste and Tailing Conference in Brisbane from 29-30 July this year.
