AusIMM provides resources sector insights on higher education quality and governance
As part of our ongoing post-election engagement program, AusIMM continues to actively brief Federal Government Ministers, Shadow Ministers, and Parliamentary Committee members on critical higher education matters impacting our sector.
This includes our recent comprehensive submission to the Senate Education and Employment Committee's inquiry into the quality of governance at Australian higher education providers.
Our submission, dated 6 March 2025, provided a unique perspective, highlighting the acute skills shortages and evolving occupational demands within the resources sector. We outlined opportunities to expand pathways for Australians into vocational, para-professional, and professional roles, and shared examples of challenges facing mining-related higher education programs, such as course viability concerns.
"Maintaining a strong pipeline of skilled professionals is vital for our industry's future and for Australia's economy," said AusIMM CEO Stephen Durkin. "Our recommendations to the Committee emphasised the need for governance structures that incentivise industry engagement in curriculum design, ensure courses meet defined industry needs, and prioritise industry-embedded training and research programs."
We also recommended that governance bodies for mining-related programs include individuals with relevant industry experience, ensuring direct input on course design and delivery. This proactive engagement reflects our commitment to safeguarding the future talent pipeline for our members and the broader community.
We extend our sincere thanks to the many members whose insights and on-the-ground experiences inform these crucial advocacy efforts.
