14th Indonesian Student Mining Competition (ISMC), Bandung Indonesia
In 1996 some Indonesian students (HMT- ITB) attended the Students Mining competition organised by the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. This inspired the Indonesian students to organise a similar event in 1998, that is held every 2 years, with the present games of 2024 being the 14th event. The mining competition seeks to focus on developing practical and realistic mining skills, along with growing friendships across the industry.
The theme of this 14th games is “Mine the Future: Embracing Unity, Knowledge, and Excellence”, and encompasses the concepts of exploring the potential of human resources through knowledge and friendship to achieve a sustainable future for the mining industry. The event takes place at the ITB university in Bandung, Indonesia. The official opening was on the 18th Feb, and closed on 25th February 2024.
All participants are enrolled as undergraduate students, and teams are comprising of 8 participants. A registration fee of US $500 per team. There are 16 mining competitions of; written test, mine design, rolling resistance, rock drilling, rock mineral identification & grain counting, mine surveying, mine evacuation rescue, bench blasting, underground mine support, tie in, and ventilation duct hanging, slug Test, Hand mucking, mine excavation, orienteering, track stand. The first day of events includes a safety briefing related to such activities, and other activities include a lab tour.

The University of NSW student team comprised Mr Duncan Slater (team captain), Miss Keisha Sealy, Mr Joel Carter, Mr Finn Prince, Miss Tahliaa Sampelalong, Mr Hamish Windybank and were supported with a local liaison team of Miss Chiara and Mr Fathi. The team took the additional initiative to visit the Arutmin open pit coal mine in Kalimantan, immediately prior to the games.
The Curtin University team comprised Dylan Gill (team captain), Martin Mordekhai Halim, Deon Joe, Luke Mohren, Muhammad Faris Salleh, Ananya Raj, Siti Khadijah Yusni, Lehyina Yaxley.
The University of Queensland team comprised Carib Phillips (team captain), Tobias Massang, Danielle McCaig, Alexandra Tolley, Hamish Douglas, Morgan Fleet, Imogen Berridge, Adam Brown.
An expression of the UNSW team’s outlook is "We are delighted to contribute to the fostering of global collaboration within the resources sector at the 14th Indonesian Students Mining Competition.
