Building a Cyber Secure Future in Australia's 2030 Vision and Its Impact on Mining
Next in our series of presentations from the ConSoc Forum 2024 is a presentation by Shaun Barnett from Ever Nimble titled 'Let’s Talk 2030: Australia’s Goal of Being the Most Cyber Secure Country'. Shaun talks about Australia’s ambitious target to protect critical infrastructure through strengthened regulation, skilled workforce development, and collaborative efforts.
The presentation outlines the following areas:
1. Current Cyber Security in Australia: Current cyber threat statistics, and laws including The Privacy Act 1988, Corporations Act 2013 and SOCI Act 2018.
2. Australia’s 2030 Vision: A six-part roadmap including Strong Businesses, Safe Technology, World Class threat sharing and blocking, Protected Critical Infrastructure, Sovereign capabilities, and resilient region and global leadership.
3. New Privacy Act: Updates to the existing Privacy act, including Children’s Online Privacy Code, new enforcement powers and simplified international data sharing.
4. New Cyber Security Act: Including mandatory reporting of ransomware attacks, security standards for smart phones, and enhanced government powers.
5. Focus on the Mining Industry, and What’s Missing from the Recent Changes: The main threats include emails and systems being compromised, leading to access of business-critical information, and online banking fraud. The next steps to achieve the 2030 goal include additional technical standards for cyber security, increased consumer rights, and stricter data privacy regulations.
