The mining industry is seeing steady progress through the adoption of digital technologies that improve how resources are explored and managed. At the 2024 Forum, Paul Hodkiewicz presented 'Technology and Innovation in the Mining Industry: How Hard Is It?', highlighting how advanced tools are enhancing orebody understanding and supporting more effective, sustainable mining practices.

It focuses on the following areas:

  1. Improving orebody knowledge: An understanding of the geometric limits of orebodies is important for effective recovery and minimsing dilution, and an overall solid understanding of the orebody allows for better decision making.
  2. New sensors and technology supporting mining systems: Many examples of sensor technologies for core-logging, mapping, and drilling.
  3. Collaborating with orebody customers: A reliable orebody model is an integral part of the Integrated Mining System, leading to safe and sustainable value delivery.
  4. Examples: Recognising orebody patterns through modelling of additional geochemical variables and using multi-bench mineral heat maps to determine orebody limits.

Watch the full presentation by Paul Hodkiewicz below to learn how technology is shaping orebody understanding and supporting smarter mining practices.
