38th International Geological Congress - Melbourne

The IGC2028 Melbourne bid committee will form the core of the IGC2028 Melbourne Organising Committee that will lead the various sub-committees responsible for the various aspects of delivering an innovative and successful Congress.

The Australian Geoscience Council (AGC), its eight member organisations, and the Australasian geoscience research community, are delighted to present a bid to host the prestigious 38th International Geological Congress (IGC) in Melbourne, September 2028. The bid includes a five-day program of scientific talks distributed across up to 60 parallel sessions, plenary sessions and focussed symposia, designed in collaboration with IUGS Commissions and Task Groups, professional organisations, universities, researchers and geological surveys. The event will include. An array of scientific workshops for professional development, including next generation technology and applied geoscience research. Support and professional development of early career geoscience professionals will be a focus.

The event will include an aspect of public outreach and education.  Multiple public-facing events including a ‘Big Ideas in Geosciences’ and Plenary sessions (including team debates) on contemporary topics and challenges, the Earth Futures Film Festival and collaboration with Melbourne Museum and Earth Science education providers. Earth Science educator exchange opportunities for those from less privileged jurisdictions with Australian and New Zealand universities.
