Past event recaps

Hunter Region Branch: 12th annual Jameson Distinguished Lecture "Effect of water quality in flotation performace"

The Annual Jameson Distinguished Lecture, in honour of Emeritus Professor Graeme Jameson was presented in October 2025 by the Hunter Region Branch to highlight innovations in mineral processing.

Thirty members attended at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club to hear the lecture, presented by Associate Professor Seher Ata from the University of NSW. We were honoured to have Professor Jameson attending on the night.

Water quality plays a critical role in flotation performance, influencing both process chemistry and the efficiency of mineral and coal separation. The presentation examined how variations in water composition affect reagent behaviour, froth stability, and overall recovery. A particular focus was on the impact of recycled water, which often deteriorates in quality due to the accumulation of inorganic and organic species.

The presentation also highlighted practical implications for water management and outlined strategies to mitigate adverse effects and optimise flotation performance under varying water quality conditions.

The Members enjoyed this free event including networking over drinks & finger food before and after the presentation. A thank you also goes to committee member Liam Kelly-Sigurdsson for hosting the event.
