Enhancing mining operations with digital twin technology through an integrated multi-brand software approach

The mining industry faces significant challenges, including economic volatility, stringent environmental regulations, and increasing demands for operational efficiency and sustainability. As the sector embraces digital transformation, Digital Twin technology emerges as a pivotal advancement. Leveraging Dassault Systemes® advanced software suite-including GEOVIA™, DELMIA™, CATIA™ and SIMULIA™-this technology provides a real-time virtual representation of mining operations, facilitating scenario simulation, challenge prediction, and process optimisation. This paper explores the role of interoperability and integration in deploying Digital Twin technology across mining operations. By establishing seamless data exchange between various software tools, mining companies can achieve higher levels of integration, ensuring that all components work harmoniously. The Mining Maturity Level framework, inspired by Building Information Modelling (BIM), is proposed to assess and enhance the implementation of digital technologies, automation, and optimisation processes, driving the industry towards greater efficiency and sustainability. Mining Information Modelling (MIM), inspired by BIM principles, is introduced to advance digital asset representation and improve mining operations. By progressing through defined maturity levels, companies can systematically enhance operational efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the incorporation of Al and machine learning enhances data security, transparency, and predictive insights, enabling real-time data analytics for predictive maintenance and operational adjustments. Collaborative ecosystems also integrate stakeholders into the decision-making process, leading to improved project outcomes. This research demonstrates how integrated software solutions and Digital Twin technology can revolutionise mining operations, aligning with the ongoing evolution of digital technologies in the industry. By leveraging these tools and frameworks, mining companies can better adapt to challenges, optimise resource utilisation, and achieve a more sustainable and efficient future.
