Integrating operational design and data analytics to maximise shovel performance in an open cut coalmine
Real-time performance solutions are advanced systems that monitor and analyse the actual machine performance, providing instant feedback to operators and planners. While these smart solutions excel at offering real-time feedback, their effectiveness is limited if they operate under a poorly designed plan. The literature agrees that shovel efficiency is influenced by characteristics of the material being loaded, such as fragmentation and bank height. Proper geometric configurations are important to ensure optimal equipment performance. In an open cut coalmine, it may be required multiple shovel cuts to reach the coal seam. The profile of each cut is primarily determined by the thickness of the overburden, the characteristics of the coal seam itself and the shovel size. Using historical data from a shovel monitoring system, this study seeks to correlate bench height with shovel performance metrics in an open cut coalmine in the Bowen Basin. By applying the proposed methodology, the study demonstrates how the height impacts shovel productivity. To conclude, the results of the study indicate that operational performance has a more substantial impact on shovel productivity compared to bench height.
