Real-time detection of perimeter breaches using high-precision GPS for enhanced safety in high-risk dumping zones in open pit mining
Mining operations involve high risks, particularly material dumping in designated high-risk disposal areas. A high-risk disposal area is characterised by a five-meter disposal bench height and a base filled with water or mud. The primary concern in these areas is slope stability, which is affected by material properties, bench heights, and water levels. Organisations must establish a safety distance limit for trucks transferring materials to manage safety risks in high-risk dumping areas. This limit is determined through geotechnical assessments. If trucks exceed the designated safe dumping limits, they risk sinking or sliding into water-filled zones, risking safety. The authors have innovatively developed a Real-Time Detection System with a High-Precision GPS (Global Positioning System) installed in Komatsu HD785-7 trucks. Unlike traditional methods, this system uses two pairs of rovers positioned by a Komatsu DZ375 Bulldozer to define the perimeter of the dumping safety boundary. It also provides real-time audio guidance to the truck operator, ensuring constant awareness of the safe dumping distance. Any violation of the safe dumping perimeter is promptly recorded by CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) cameras, providing visual evidence of the dumping activity. The truck operator receives real-time audio guidance in the cab to help maintain a safe dumping distance based on the truck's location relative to the designated safe dump perimeter. The dump truck operator must always be aware of this reference.
