Towards responsible mining - ESG-integrated multi-objective optimisation in sublevel stoping production scheduling

The increasing focus on sustainable practices in mining operations has created a demand for comprehensive production scheduling models that incorporate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors. This research presents a novel multi-objective optimisation model specifically developed for production scheduling in sublevel stoping mining operations, targeting sustainability challenges within the industry. The model addresses three primary objectives: maximising Net Present Value (NPV), minimising the socio-environmental effects of carbon emissions and ground vibration. Using NSGA-II, a Pareto front of optimal solutions was generated, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of trade-offs between the objectives. The study used conceptual data to model the production of 200 stopes, optimising NPV, carbon emissions and Peak Particle Velocity (PPV). Three solutions from the Pareto front were analysed. The solution with the highest NPV achieved AS311.78 million, while the most environmentally favourable option reduced carbon emissions to 13 551 t. Solution C, chosen as the compromise option, delivered an NPV of A$310.19 million (0.51 per cent below the highest), carbon emissions of 18 890 t (12.3 per cent lower than the maximum) and a PPV of 331 mm/s (13.8 per cent below the peak value). Applying NSGA-II to this production scheduling problem provides a flexible and powerful tool for decision- makers to evaluate a wide range of trade-offs and select an optimal solution that aligns with their corporate and environmental objectives. By considering both the financial and non-financial outcomes, mining companies can make more informed choices that contribute to long-term sustainability while still achieving strong profitability.
