Don’t expect normal sequence – the opportunity of unconventional Marra Mamba exploration in the South-Eastern Hamersley Province

The Archaean Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) is a prolific source of high grade iron ore within the Hamersley Basin of the Pilbara region in Western Australia, with mineralisation predominantly associated with the Mount Newman Member. In normal sequence exploration, the prospective Newman Member is often a relatively simple target, whereby the oldest and thickest unit in the MMIF (Nammuldi; AHmu) usually presents as un-mineralised outcrops of Banded Iron Formation (BIF). The overlying MacLeod (AHmm) and Newman Members (AHmn) are more likely to be mineralised, may also outcrop or are at a relatively shallow depth beneath more recent cover. In the South-eastern Hamersley Basin however, deformation associated with the Ophthalmian and Capricorn Orogenies was particularly intense. This produced east-west trending folds, found across the province, that are increasingly tight, upright to over turned (north verging) and occasionally even recumbent. The MMIF can also be buried by thick recent (Tertiary) cover. This presents both a different economic opportunity and a less straight forward exploration play, which can be further complicated by faulting.Using exploration targeting strategies learned from conventional MMIF exploration can lead to exploration failure with early drill testing presenting only inferior mineralisation opportunities, with the high grade potential often overlooked. With an understanding of the structural setting, the Newman Member can be delineated within unconventional targets. Often this can come with significant additional mineralisation in AHmm and AHmu that is not commonly found in more simple geological settings.
